EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
