Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
