The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to build it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – really, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.
We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' into 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment within America who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into a figure of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense of him since they are atheists or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly definitely not the account of a powerful ruler emerging; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine focuses on affection for other people, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever someone steals your outer garment you must offer him your sweater as well.
The evident and straightforward reality that the Savior of the gospels calls for a type of profound affection centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the determined opposition to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided significant comfort to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We must have to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities of American history.
We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and welcome him or not?
America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the best about American history, just as Christianity is best defended by reference to that which renders it unique and wonderful, which is the example of Jesus. In all circumstances does it mean feigning the most negative of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both meekness and conviction, a combination that serious American Christians ought to accept.
